I live in Dublin and visit England is very easy and quick, it takes just 30 minutes of flight; for this reason, I decided to go to Liverpool. I went just for the weekend with the plan to visit only the city centre and have some fun with its animated nightlife. It is a lovely city, modern but at the same time, with its palace in Victorian style, very historical and original.

The city of Liverpool has a relatively ancient and important history. During the 700-800 the town became famous for its strategic position for trade. Liverpool is located along the Mersey River and overlooks the Republic of Ireland. The population of the city overgrew thanks to maritime commerce and the first industries that were opened and so immigration from all over Europe and especially from Ireland increased. Liverpool during World War II was hit brutally and failed to regain the commercial power it had before.
In the 1960s, however, there was another reason that brought Liverpool to fame: The Beatles. The Beatles joined in 1960 in this very city where they played in clubs and basements, and everyone knows that they became the most famous and influential band of all time.

Much of the city's tourism develops around these two characteristics: trade and the Beatles but I must say that it is worth visiting this city because it is pretty, lively and youthful.

Liverpool Must to see

The Royal Albert Dock is a five-storey complex of red brick and iron built in 1841 and was the warehouse that was used to load ships of various things. The Albert Dock, indeed, is located on the bank of the Mersey River and at the time of construction was considered a modern and very functional building. Today the warehouse is no longer used for maritime trade but has been well converted to host shops, museums and restaurants. A nice walk around here can not miss.

The thing you absolutely cannot miss when you are in Liverpool is a visit to something that recalls the Beatles. Personally, I'm not a big fan, but they have had such a significant impact on the history of music that, for me, it was a sacrilege not to know more about it.

The first place I visited was The Beatles Story. It is very interactive and not at all boring museum that tells the story of the four young men of Liverpool who have become an icon. The museum tells their music, the places where everything started and the places where they became known but also tells anecdotes about them but also about albums and lyrics. You can find replicas of Casbah, Mathew Street and The Cavern the crucial places of the band, the reproduction of the yellow submarine but also the gigography of the famous cover Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The whole exhibition is accompanied by an audio guide with interesting anecdotes and videos.
After seeing the Beatles Museum, of course, I wanted to go to the Cavern Pub; think of my disappointment when I discovered that the original Pub no longer exists and that what there is now only borrowed the name. The Cavern Pub was a famous club on Matthew Street opened in 1957 that became famous for rock music in the early 1960s. The Beatles made over 200 appearances in this pub. They could no longer perform when they became very famous, and there were too many people to listen to them.

Top Things to do in Liverpool

First of all, the thing that fascinated me the most was the Radio City Tower. Originally called St. John's Beacon it was built-in 1969 and houses a panoramic restaurant until 1999 when it was restructured and now is home of the City Radio. Three hundred eighteen meters high, it has 558 steps and two lifts that take you to the first floor in 30 seconds, today it is one of the fascinating attractions of Liverpool because from the top you have, almost, a 360-degree view of the city and a breathtaking view.

Walking in the city, it is impossible not to notice the vast and bizarre sculpture at some corner of Liverpool; Its name is Lambanana. It is, as the word says, a Lamb and banana, hilarious name, the name is due to the fact that the lamb and bananas were the thing more commercialized in the port of Liverpool. Created by Taro Chienzo in 1998 for an art exhibition, after many movements around the city, in 2010 they decided to leave it permanently in the streets of the town. And they made the right chose because they are amazing and so funny.

Near the Chinese district, we can find the Cathedral of Liverpool. The Cathedral is in neo-gothic style, and it is very vast, not only the church but also the garden that surrounded it. The Cathedral of Liverpool was inaugurated only in 1978, and it is the eighth largest Cathedral in the world. There is something that I found particular in this church, the Whispering arch. It is inside the church in a corner, and I found it almost by chance, it is singular because by sitting on either end of the bow you can hear the other person's voice just whispering instead of screaming.

Curiosity

  • In 2004 the dock of Liverpool had been inscribed into the list of the World Heritage. Direct from the UNESCO website:

"Liverpool played an important role in the growth of the British Empire and became the major port for the mass movement of people, e.g. slaves and emigrants from northern Europe to America. Liverpool was a pioneer in the development of modern dock technology, transport systems and port management."
  • The Sun. If you happen to get into a taxi, you will undoubtedly notice some stickers that say "the sun is not welcome into this city" and not only inside the taxis but a little everywhere in the city. It is an unfortunate story and a wound still open to the town of Liverpool. We are talking about a boycott by the city of Liverpool towards the newspaper that lasts from 30 years.
